Spring is the perfect time to re-commit yourself to your food, fitness, and lifestyle goals. And with swimsuit season just around the corner, there’s no better time to start making some changes to better your mind, body and soul! If you’re looking to get started, here are 5 simple tips for getting healthier (and happier) this spring.
1. Learn to Walk Before you Run
If you haven’t worked out in ages or can’t even remember the last time you ate a vegetable, start off slowly to minimize the risk of injuring yourself or throwing your body completely out of whack. Start by power walking a few times a week, then switch to jogging, running and/or interval training. Instead of going on a full-blown detox, start by substituting some veggies for a starchy side dish a few times a week. Making small step-by-step changes will give you the momentum to make more–and keep it up.
2. Check Yo’self
It may seem like a pain, but it’s important to get that yearly check-up. While you’re there, discuss your wellness goals with your doctor, and plan out how to achieve them. Also, make sure to address any health-related issues you’re having and don’t be afraid to ask questions–it’s better to get some piece of mind than to keep wondering about a seemingly insignificant (or embarrassing) problem.
3. Plug In
Diet and exercise-tracking apps are great ways to see your overall daily wellness. Keeping track of your food intake can help uncover calorie bombs that are sabotaging your progress, and tracking your activities can give you a better understanding of how much energy you actually expend. In addition, there’s a ton of fitness and healthy living tips on the internet, so keep yourself educated, up to date and in the know.
4. Get Backup
Get your friends and family involved. They’ll keep you from feeling alone in your wellness journey, and keep you motivated to reach your goals. Whether it’s going for a jog with your BFF or getting the whole family to eat less take out, everyone can benefit from making healthier choices.
5. More Me-Time
Relaxation and your mental health is just as important as diet and exercise. Making time for your hobbies, or extra sleep, will make you more focused and alert. The better your mental health, the more likely you are to make healthy decisions throughout the day, month and year.
The most important wellness tip is to not get discouraged. Progress may sometimes feel slow, but remember that every step forward is a step towards a healthier–and happier–you.
